Deep in the shadows of the Colorado Rockies, nestled between the middle of nowhere and miles from where anyone can hear you scream, waits the Overlook Hotel. For its new caretakers, the Torrance family, the only thing more unnerving than their profound seclusion is the realisation that they are not the hotel’s only guests. The young son with a sixth sense endures the house of horrors as his father faces demons – past and present, real and remembered – that ultimately turn him into a monster. What started as a desperate search for financial and marital sanctuary, spirals into a terrifying struggle for sanity and survival. With music as haunting as the story is tragic, only through opera does The Shining reach more frightening depths than ever before. The Shining will be sung in English, with English subtitles. Approximate running time is 2 hours, 15 minutes with one intermission.
Conductor: Gerard Schwarz
Director: Eric Simonson

Madison Bach Musicians will start their season with a tribute to the poise, wit, and irrepressible joy of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Though the two composers came from very different musical and socio-economic backgrounds—Haydn, lower working class, rural, musical but untrained; Mozart, urban, solid middle class, musically trained, sophisticated, and ambitious―both managed to carve out successful careers in the fertile musical culture of Vienna and its environs.
Soprano Morgan Balfour―who astonished the 2019 Handel Aria Competition audience with her first-prize performance―will return to Madison to perform selections from Haydn’s English Canzonetta’s and Mozart’s fabulously concise songs and arias.
The program will cover a vast emotional range, from the opening violin & fortepiano dialog—Mozart’s pensive and lyrical Sonata in E minor–to his ebullient Trio in G major, to his inimitable songs, through to Haydn’s convivial violin and cello duo, to his ardent and sometimes naughty songs, and concluding with his uproarious Trio in C major!
As a result of public health guidelines in response to Covid-19 that do not allow for an in-person audience, we will live stream our concert from Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday evening for at-home viewing. The event will begin with a pre concert talk by Trevor Stephenson, and after the concert, the musicians will remain on stage to answer questions submitted by our audience. Sunday we will rebroadcast the Saturday evening recording and follow that with a live question and answer session with our musicians from their homes. After purchasing tickets for $15 per household, you will be sent a link to access the performance.
